You have learned about the challenges faced by immigrants to America around 1900. According to the Library of Congress, approximately 15 million immigrants, mostly from eastern and southern European countries, arrived in America during the late 1800s and early 1900s. By 1910, up to 75 percent of New Yorkers were immigrants or first-generation Americans.
For this portfolio project, you will conduct research and examine pictures, which are primary documents, that show the immigrant experience. You will analyze theses pictures & create a presentation in which you answer the question: How did immigration affect immigrants and other Americans around the year 1900?
Step 1: Research
Select 4 pictures that represent a firsthand perspective of immigrants as they arrived at Ellis Island, in the New York Harbor (busiest entry point in the country for immigration).
Save a copy of the picture you choose.
Identify a date associated with each picture.
1-2 sentence summary describing how this image represents the immigrant experience.
LIST OF WEBSITES YOU CAN USE: You must use a minimum of 2 resources
You are now ready to analyze. Reflect on the information you learned while researching immigration in the early 20th century. Select 2 of the 5 questions below. Note your thoughts--you will use them later in your presentation.
What challenges did immigrants face upon arrival in America?
What you think these immigrants imagined for their future?
What dreams did they hold? Were the dreams the same for each group?
What steps do you think these immigrants would need to take in order to adjust to life in America?
How would immigrants learn to live in a nation with a culture different from their own?
Step 3 – Create the Presentation
You are now ready to create your presentation. Your presentation should contain a minimum of 8 slides. You can create this using PowerPoint, Google Slides, Prezi, etc. Below is a list of the information that each slide must contain. Please remember to proof read before you submit.
Slide #1: Title slide with your name and brief description of your presentation
Slide #6: 1st analysis question & response from step 2
Slide #7: 2nd analysis question & response from step 2
Slide #8: Citation Slide-- include a minimum of 2citations. These are the sources you used to gather your research. DO NOT USE WIKIPEDIA. It is not an academic site and will not be accepted.
Step 4- Submit your Presentation
Upload your presentation to the drop box located on slide 8 of Unit 4: Lesson 5
